How are you easing in?

Reader, do you remember the last time "how are you" didn't feel like a loaded question? I know I don't.

My 2025 word of the year was community.

For many of the communities I identify with—nonprofit, Jewish, American—these are challenging times in different ways, and have been for some time now.

No matter where you are, things likely feel heavy in one way or another.

Which is exactly why my 2026 word of the year is ease.

Not because things are easy, and not because we can—or should—opt out of what's hard.

But because especially when things are hard, it's more important than ever to make things easier in whatever ways we can.

And because in nonprofit work, we often default to making things harder than they have to be.

Ease, for me, looks like creating space for moments of light with people I care about.

It looks like staying connected to shared identities and shared values—because facing hard things is easier when we don't do it alone. (It seems "community" is sticking around this year too....)

Reader, ease also shows up in clarity.

Being clear about what your organization does, why it matters, and who it matters to creates ease—for you, your team, and your supporters.

When that happens:

  • You don't have to constantly reinvent the wheel.
  • You and your team are more aligned.
  • Your outreach feels more confident.
  • And raising awareness and funds doesn't feel quite so heavy.

If ease through clarity is something you want for your nonprofit this year, here are a few ways I support nonprofit leaders like you:

Strategic Messaging Guide
A clear messaging foundation for all marketing and development communications, so you can raise awareness and funds with ease.

Ongoing Communications Support
Steady, strategic editing or writing support to help you carry that clarity forward without having to do it all yourself.

In a world where so many of us are carrying more than we ever expected to, ease feels like something we could all use more of this year.

To explore what that looks like for you and your organization, let's talk.

Rooting for you this year,

Jordana

PS: When you're growing a nonprofit, ease also looks like connecting with the right resources to help answer "how do I...?" My friend and fellow consultant, Ephraim Gopin, is setting out to help you get the answers you need with the How Do I virtual conference. Eight fundraising experts will provide you with expert advice and best practices that you can implement right away.

If you work at a nonprofit with a budget under $5M, both the content and the price point of this conference are for you. You can learn more about the conference here, and enter "message" at checkout for 15% off for my subscribers. It's a great way to ease into the new year :)

Reader, how can your people feel connected to your mission if they've never personally experienced the problem you solve? For those who celebrate Passover, this is exactly what we are tasked with, year after year: "In every generation, each person must see themselves as if they personally came out of Egypt," we read during the Passover Seder. Here's how we do it, and how you can apply it to your nonprofit's communications to connect the right people to your mission. Happy Passover to those who...

Too many.Even if the three people are your staff, board members, or donors, you’re likely to get three different answers. That’s a problem, because people won't support or spread the word about something they can't understand—your unclear messaging is likely getting in the way of your growth. One solution is to send an email like this one. It’s a great example of the power of clear...

Reader, communicating your nonprofit's message isn't easy. And it's even harder if you get stuck on one (or more) or these four common misconceptions about it: 1) “We do so much, there’s no way to communicate it all concisely.” I get it—you should be proud of everything you do! But…everyone doesn't need to know everything. Your goal isn’t to communicate everything you do, it’s to share a message that resonates with the right people and draws them in to learn more. Strong communication is...
